The employer based delivery of healthcare originated in the 1940’s as a way to attract workers. There was a limit to wages that could be offered, so large companies competed for employees by offering more attractive health insurance benefits. This system worked for a number of years, unfortunately today, health care costs are rising at double the rate of inflation and employers are having to cut benefits, raise premiums, and otherwise eliminate the benefits of being covered through an employer. Many people are therefore turning to individual health insurance policies, but are at the mercy of underwriting and having preexisting conditions excluded. What Americans need is the security and size of an employer based system, but the cost benefits of an individual policy. How can this be achieved? Is an employee wellness program what we need? Do all employers have these employee wellness programs readily available?
