For Rachael Muniz, having a job did not mean having insurance. When her husband lost his job, they both lost their insurance coverage as well. Although she worked full time at psychiatric clinic as an insurance biller, the premium for her employer provided plan was too high for them to afford. Muniz found herself relying on free clinics and shopping around for cheap prescriptions to make it through the 10 month period of being uninsured. She signed her son up for a state funded insurance program to cover his needs. Her situation is not uncommmon in Louisiana, where one in five were uninsured even before the start of the recession. Louisiana has the third highest rate of uninsured citizens in the country, and the number will only go up as the recession deepens. Are situations like Muniz’s the reason for this problem? Are employer provided insurance policies too expensive for most to afford? Or is this just a small piece of the puzzle?
