Our nations’ employer based health care system leaves much to be desired as millions of our nation’s citizens remain uninsured. For many people, free clinics have filled the gap and provided care when there was no where else to turn. In Vermont, the Bennington County clinic has been run for years by retired physicians who volunteer their time and services to care for the community’s needy. The clinic has 40 volunteering physicians and over 100 other volunteers who provide care to working adults who either have no access to health care through their employer or who cannot afford the coverages their employer offers. This displays the inherent flaws in the employer-provided health care system, that so many working adults have to seek medical care through a free clinic rather than via traditional insurance coverage. Will there come a day when the efforts of this clinic are no longer needed? Can our nation change the fundamental way in which health care is provided?
