The Carrollton City Council is looking at ways to trim its budget, and cutting the cost of health care is one of the proposed means. The Kentucky County currently offers its employees health insurance at no charge to the employee and extends is to the employee’s spouse and children. In many cases, this offers spouses andĀ even their childrenĀ the luxury of double coverage, since they have coverage through their own employer. The City Council has looked at alternatives such as offering incentives to have employees drop their families from their policy, such as contributing to a health savings account instead. The Council refuses to have employees themselves pay for coverage, so that will remain unchanged. But the greatest expenses come from covering the spouses and children, and if the council can find a way to encourage people to drop the double coverage, it would save the city a large amount of money. How few people in the world have the benefit of free insurance for themselves, much less for their families? Is maintaining this double coverage far too much of a luxury to be allowed?

Well, the employees are definitely the beneficiary of such great coverage, but it is unfair that it comes at an expense to taxpayers.

I didn’t think you were allowed to have two health insurance policies.
