A letter written recently to the Argus Times expressed concern that health insurance benefits provided to teachers were unfairly costly to tax payers and indicated that teachers did not contribute anything to their health insurance coverage. In response, a local school teacher wrote in to defend herself and her coworkers stating that teachers do indeed pay a contribution to their policies, as well as paying copays for doctors visits and the like. While school board employees were not facing an increase in premiums this year, part of the issue which raised alarm for taxpayers, she asserted that teachers will however have to contribute more towards those premiums, in addition to paying higher copays and percentages towards their care and treatments. It seems that no one can escape the steadily rising costs of healthcare, even those in government type positions. Do you think teachers deserve better benefits given the nature of their service based position and relatively low salaries?
