It is becoming more and more of a rare commodity these days, having a job which provides access to quality health insurance benefits. What used to be the norm has become the exception as rising costs have forced employers to share more of the burden with their employers or drop the coverages altogether. This leaves many people with no alternative than to see private insurance. Unfortunately, there is power in numbers so to speak, and many benefits of belonging to a group policy dissapear with an individual policy. Maternity coverage for example, something that is shared in a large pool of employees, is most often excluded on an individual policy. As an alarming number of people lose access to group coverage, and are unable to get coverage through a private company, there results a lack in care or extremely high medical bills which must be paid out of pocket. How can maternity coverage be excluded for so many women? What as a country are we doing to one another in the name of profit?
