While Obama is tauting the benefits of a “universal” type health care system for America, many have fears about the ramifications of such a movement. Opponents of the idea point to Hawaii as evidence that such a health insurance system has inherent flaws. When the same type of public plan was made available for residents of Hawaii, more than 8 out of 10 who enrolled had already been covered by health insurance. The program did little to reach those who were uninsured. Additionally, many who enrolled were previously covered by a private insurance plan, which means that a public plan could cause the erosion of the private insurance industry. So Obama’s promise that a government provided health insurance program would not affect those with insurance they are already happy with, may not be able to back that promise up.
