While Obama is tauting the benefits of a “universal” type health care system for America, many have fears about the ramifications of such a movement. Opponents of the idea point to Hawaii as evidence that such a health insurance system has inherent flaws. When the same type of public plan was made available for residents of Hawaii, more than 8 out of 10 who enrolled had already been covered by health insurance. The program did little to reach those who were uninsured. Additionally, many who enrolled were previously covered by a private insurance plan, which means that a public plan could cause the erosion of the private insurance industry. So Obama’s promise that a government provided health insurance program would not affect those with insurance they are already happy with, may not be able to back that promise up. Do you think private and public insurance can coexist, or will there ultimately be a move to a purely public program?
