In spite of taking the completely opposite stance during the presidential campaign, Obama is now looking at the possibility of taxing health insurance benefits. While employer provided group health insurance benefits have for decades been pre-tax, the administration is looking at the possibility of taxing these benefits in an effort to generate funding for the sweeping health care reform which is needed in this country. The overhaul of our nation’s health care system is expected to cost as much as $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years, and so those involved in the budget are looking at a number of ways to come up with the funds to cover this momentous effort. How will public opinion be affected if Obama does decide to tax employer provided health insurance benefits?
