The prevailing sentiment among Americans in years past was that the only people without insurance were the homeless. Traditionally, insurance has been tied to employment, meaning that people who had jobs automatically had health insurance. This has declined steadily in recent years, with more and more companies unable to meet the cost of rising health insurance premiums. A massive number of employed people find themselves either without the option of health insurance, or with the inability to pay for it due to high costs. The recent increase in the unemployment rate has led to an even greater number of people without insurance, again sparking the debate over whether health insurance should be tied to a job. What side of the argument do you fall on? Can we make the employer based system work, or is it time for something completely new and different?
