It’s a sad state of affairs when so many people are in fear of losing their job, and thus their health insurance, that a new type of insurance product has been born to asuage that fear. UnitedHealth is introducing an insurance which provides no medical coverage or benefits, but instead the promise of coverage should one lose one’s job and existing insurance. For people who would find it difficult to aqcuire coverage in the individual insurance marketplace as it currently stands, this guarantee could mean the difference between being insured and being out of luck. And for early retirees who would face a period between being covered by employer provided insurance and then being covered by Medicare, this could be a life saver. Unfortunately, this program would not be available to people with preexisting conditions, making it flawed by the same standards as any individual policy. What do you think about this type of insurance? Is it a good idea, or just a way to capitalize on people’s fear?

Most of these programs are flawed but at least they are trying!
