The recession has resulted in a surge of unemployment and a resulting loss of health insurance coverage among a broad spectrum of the population. Wellpoint Inc, one of the nation’s largest providers of health insurance plans, has reported a loss of roughly half a million members in the last 4 months. Approximately 325,000 of these members lost coverage due to layoff or opting out of employer provided coverage. Ken Goulet, head of the commercial division, says that the massive loss in membership is unprecedented. Research estimates that for every 1 percent increse in the unemployment rate, another 1 million Americans lose their health insurance. As many as 9 million Americans are said to have lost their insurance since December 2007 with about 4 million of them remaining uninsured to this day. Is the nation’s health care structure, which has been traditionally dependent on employment, mostly to blame for the size and scope of this problem?
