It has been a long standing practice that employer based health insurance benefits are not taxed. At the center of a great debate during the presidential election campaign, Obama harshly opposed McCain for making the suggestion to end the tax exemption of employer health insurance. However, since taking office, Obama and his fellow Democrats have softened toward the idea and recognize that such a move could generate billions of dollars to fund various aspects of health care reform. Some fear that this would signal an end of employer based coverage, while others feel that the change could actually strengthen it be enabling providers to offer more competitive prices for premiums. What do you think would be the outcome? Will America see a move away from the tradition of employer based coverage, or are we too set in our ways to let go of this system?
