The debate over the delivery system of health insurance in this country has been a heated debate for many months now. The Republicans are leaning more toward a free market type system, the Democrats more toward a government run, single payer system. Up in the air is the idea of whether employers will still be involved in either plan. Criticism of the free market system, which would eliminate the need for health insurance to be tied to a specific job, advocate that health insurance cannot work like car insurance. Car insurance works because there is just some chance that you will need to use it at some point, so companies can spread the cost of risk among its pool of members. Health insurance on the other hand, will be used, and by the chronically ill, it will be used a lot. This is why employer provided coverage has been around so long, it has allowed a pooling of resources to pay for those who need more care. If everyone were left to fend for themselves, insurance companies would have no financial incentive to cover people with continually costly needs. So, in comes the need for government assistance, even with a free market model. What do you think our health insurance system will end up looking like over the next decade? Will employer based coverage carry on?
