Critics of the employer based health insurance system point to several factors which have led to the failure of the current system. For one thing, back when the system originally developed, people had stable jobs that they remained in for many years, often until retirement. But in our current society, people change jobs often, which leads to a disruption in their health insurance coverage. Also, many cannot aquire coverage through an employer either because the cost is too high, the employer does not offer it, or they are simply unemployed. This leaves millions of Americans vulnerable to financial disaster as they walk around without any protection. Is there any way to maintain the employer based system and improve the rate of those with coverage, or must we completely abandon it in favor of a completely new system? Will the group health insurance market, employee benefits space be a venue of the past?
